Hard wiring power outlet

Post by Dave_W » 29 Jun 2015, 18:25

Im going to hard wire my sat nav in and wondered if the following was possible.
Cut off the cigar lighter attachment from a fused line direct from battery. Cut off the in car charging attachment from the sat nav charger and solder and shrink wrap both together.
For the grand finale I'll throw in an on/off switch after the fuse to save on discharge when not in use.

Anyone tried it? Alternatively is there anyone with electrical knowledge that can comment?

Cheers :)

Nice one Lee. That looks a safer option than me fettling with a soldering iron. It never ends well.

Take the power off the front brake light switch. That way it is a switch live with the ignition. Used to run heated grips that way. Can't forget to switch them off then.

Would you still need the 12v to 5v box if you wire it that way? I have to check a wiring diagram and see what the voltage output is from the switch. It's got to be 5 to power the sat nav. Great idea though.

The brake circuit will run on 12v, so adapter still needed.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a play when I get the wiring delivered and see what looks safest/tidiest. I can't have me bike looking bollocks :)

I've a mate who makes plug and play wiring looms for most bikes. I've got one on my blade very simple to connect and you can add virtually any type of outlet to it. It's a switched live so no power drain

Nice kit.

Just one point that it is only 1A output, could be and issue on some equipment,
I use a twin outlet USB in a ciggy lighter socket, 1 outlet at 1 amp and the other is 2.1amp for higher usage kit.

The SD has 2 ignition live connections as standard 1 in headlamp cowling and 1 under the seat, so plenty of choice of location.
