Exhaust dB limit

Post by Daveace22 » 01 May 2016, 18:40

Just a quick question. I'm looking to buy a new slip-on end can for my blade but reading the technical specifications the dB output is around 102 what's the actual limit I'm allowed?

For the uk?

Don't think there is a specified level.
The problems come when it says not for road use or for race use.

If you get pulled and its obvious you have removed a baffle you may get a nice bit of paper telling you to get it to an mot station.

If it comes with no baffle, and isnt marked as being for race use you shouldnt have a problem.

No limit for noise on road, it is at the MOT testers/plods discretion.

Correct 98db in UK, 95db in France. Info from Quill exhausts.

Goverment says this

Modified exhaust systems
It’s illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been ‘type approved’ (checked it meets environmental and safety standards).

The police can also take action if your vehicle’s silencer doesn’t work in the way it was designed or if you’re driving in a way that creates too much noise.

Cant see anything with a specific limit?

!st link does not cover bikes.

2nd is regs for drive by limits, It does say however there are NO static noise limits. Basically for engines over 175cc, less than 80db on drive by measured as an average between 2nd and 3rd gear, at 50kmh.

So as long as you exhaust complies with this limit it is legal. Just ride your bike at 30mph in 3rd and you're fine. :D

IIRC 98db is one of the manufacturers recommended static limits EU shite. But is not law.

Look on the VIN plate, it tells you the approved db and revs they are at.
