Helicoil query

Post by rumpoldstilskin » 06 Mar 2016, 22:39

I've not had to helicoil anything for about 3 years now and cannot remember if i drill out the existing hole to what it was +1mm or +2mm?

I have a M5 that has stripped its thread so i'm thinking 6mm HSS drill and M5 helicoil..... Correct??

It should be 5.2mm drill for a 5mm Helicoil, 6 is way too big, 5.3mm will do at a push though.

Oh, and I think the tap will be 5.5mm.

I can double check this info tomorrow when I get in work.

Having checked the chart at work the tap required is a special helicoil tap, min pitch 5.520 Max 5.597.
I'd take up Lee's offer to save time and expense if I were you.

Although you can get an M5 kit off EBay for less than a tenner if you thought you might need it again in the future.

cheers for that, taking Lee's offer up. Just got to save up and order a full kit for the future, will save loads in the long run as the last one i ever paid for was £25 per thread :0
