The BMWs of that age will do BIG mileages, but only if they're properly serviced, maintained and well-looked after. To give you an idea of what I mean, my E46 330ci is a manual facelift 2003 model and has about 125k on the clock. I paid just £5,500 for it about 3-and-a-half years ago - it had 80k on it, FSH, a £2k LPG kit professionally fitted and was in nigh-on immaculate condition. I use it every day, both for work and personally. In the 3.5 years of ownership I've covered 45k and have done nearly all maintenance myself.

Even so I reckon I've spent about £2k on maintenance, £1k on tyres and then at least another £800-1,000 on "non-essentials" (such as wheel refurbs, new wheels, audio, gadgets/gizmos, etc.).

I could've gone and spent £7-8k on a car but decided to spend less so that I allowed a comfortable margin to adequately maintain the car, knowing I could DIY most of the work.

If you're handy with a spanner and can DIY competently then I'd have no qualms in saying go for a 3.0 petrol auto X5. If you aren't spanner-friendly then I'd say you need to have a maintenance fund of at least £1,500 a year, otherwise you may well be better off buying a Jap SUV like a Honda CRV or a Lexus RX350. If you DO go Jap though my recommendation would be the Nissan Murano. It's a very, very underrated car. It's got the 3.5 V6 from the 350Z under the bonnet and absolutely every optional extra was included as standard. Performance and fuel economy are comparable with the X5 but they just go and go and go. There's an 06 plate one with just 55k on the clock the Trader now at £4,895 located in Sale (trade garage too so you get warranty & statutory protection). The Murano didn't take off because people seemed to think it was a bit too "American" with the big chrome grille and thirsty V8. But on the used market they're a phenominal buy - all I'd do is probably spend £30 on black PlastiDip and spray the chrome grille satin black instead!

Whatever you decide though, avoid the Porsche Cayenne. If you think BMW maintenance/repair costs can be bad Porsche will make BMW look like pocket money! Plus the Cayennes are ugly as sin and sloooooow.

First time I did over 150mph was in a T5 in Germany, awesome thing.

X5 is shite. Don't bother, thirsty, you aren't a kebab shop owner or red faced steroid dealer, nor a tracksuit clad 8st coke dealer, tyres are £200 per corner, they smoke, have probably been smoked, and unreliable if not serviced or driven correctly (turbo variants)

Fast though but it'll cost you £20 for each squirt.

Go Volvo XC70 or a BMW 5 series estate type car, not a Chelsea tractor.

Or if you go range rover route, get a gas converted Vogue version, only women drive them, might have hit a few walls, bollards, parked cars but it won't have been ragged and they always get mugged off at each service replacing stuff that didn't need replacing haha.

wouldn't touch an X5, mate is a bmw specialist and everytime i go in there he's got an x5 in that's going to have a bill of well over £1,000!! they destroy diffs.

Best I've seen is my girlfriends Audi A4 estate of '02 vintage with 318,000 miles and still going strong! Granted the turbo was the only major item that needed replacing several years ago, but that's about it.

I have 2007 Range Rover TDV8, just paid out £2733 for turbos an EGR valves, if u get one make sure you have a shitload of cash for when it breaks an believe me it will

My Dad has a 52 plate 1.9 TDi A4 Avant with around 130k on the clock. My Mum keeps on saying how it's got a high mileage and won't last very long now :lol: :lol: :lol:

Since he took my advice and ditched the Audi main dealer for servicing, and instead takes it to a good, honest mechanic, all it's needed is on oil service a year and a belt kit and water pump every two years. It should soldier on like that for another 200k :lol: :lol: They're absolute machines if maintained properly!
