Cat d cars
Cat d cars
I've been looking for a little run around car for work and there's a place in Radcliffe that seem to have a lot of cat d repaired vehicles.. Does anyone know if insurance is likely to me any more expensive that normal as at the price I'm going to be paying resale value doesn't really matter..

Re: Cat d cars
You need to be clear with the insurer at the quote stage that it's a Cat D. Some will NOT insure a previously written-off vehicle but don't actively check the Register at application. They only check in the event of a claim and if they then find it on the Register will just refund your premium and walk away, saying the responsibility was your to carry out adequate due diligence regarding any accident history. I believe AGEAS was one of the underwriters who excluded Cat Cs and Ds from cover.
No issue with a Cat D car per se. Cat D means repairable but the insurer has deemed it cheaper to scrap than repair. You can write a perfectly good car off with a key on each panel - repaint cost can be £2k+ at main dealer rates so if the car's worth £3k it gets written off. I know of a Porsche Boxter S that had a market value of £15k that was written off for a slashed roof and keyed panels. Porsche dealer quoted £10k to repair, including new roof and replacement panels in their quote. Insurer wrote it off and the owner bought it back cheap, then got it repaired himself for the princely sum of £2k (no new panels required).
Always best to know what the damage/repair work was though.
